What is a Tack Sale? How Can I Benefit?

Tack sales are a favorite tradition in the horse world. Think of them as garage sales for horse people, where you can buy quality tack, show clothes, and equipment at great prices or sell items you no longer need.

What is a Tack Sale? How Can I Benefit?

If you’re part of the horse world, you know that “tack sale season” is a real thing. Around here in Michigan, most tack sales pop up during the off-season, typically between November and April, when the show schedule slows down and everyone starts cleaning out their tack rooms. In Florida and hotter states, it's in reverse months. Think of a tack sale as a garage sale for horse people. Saddles, bridles, show clothes, blankets, boots, grooming totes, you name it, it’s probably there.

Tack sales are one of the best ways to stretch your horse budget. Whether you’re trying to save a little money or make a little money, these events can work in your favor. Plus, they are so fun, and you get to connect with your horsey friends!

Benefits of Tack Sales

For buyers, tack sales are a chance to snag quality items at a fraction of retail cost. Kids outgrowing show clothes? Does the horse need a different blanket size? Looking to try a new bit without paying full price? Tack sales are the answer! For sellers, it’s an opportunity to turn unused equipment into cash. That saddle your horse never quite fit? The show jacket you wore twice? Someone else is probably looking for exactly that.

Many county 4-H programs host tack sales as fundraisers to make finding horse equipment more accessible for youth participants. Your local 4-H Extension office is a great place to ask about upcoming events. You can also find them by searching Facebook events or asking veteran horse folks in your area. Each sale tends to have its own vibe. Some lean toward higher-end show barns and larger budgets, while others are geared more toward 4-H and open show families looking for good, practical deals.

There are also larger equine events that combine shopping with education and demonstrations. Events like Equine Affaire (held in Ohio and Massachusetts) and the Midwest Horse Fair feature vendors selling new tack, apparel, and horse-related products. While these aren’t traditional used tack swaps, they are excellent opportunities to compare products and shop in one place.

How to Make the Most of a Tack Sale

Cash is King!

Some sales are held in barns or fairgrounds with spotty internet. Bring cash, and bring small bills. Not every seller can break a $100 bill first thing in the morning.

Wear Layers.

If you’re shopping for clothing, especially in Michigan winters, dress smart. Wear a tank top under a T-shirt under a hoodie or coat. Many sales are in unheated barns, and it’s cold here in Michigan. Layers let you stay warm while still being able to try on show clothes comfortably.

Know Your Horse’s Sizes.

Before you go, measure your horse. Blanket size, girth length, bridle size, etc. Write it down! Guessing doesn’t help anyone. Toss a small tape measure in your bag just in case.

Be Ready to Buy.

If you see something you love, grab it. Tack sales move fast, and great deals disappear quickly. If you put it down to “think about it,” someone else may walk away with it.

Make Respectful Offers.

It’s okay to negotiate, but be reasonable. Offering $5 for a $50 item isn’t negotiating; it’s insulting. Vendors pay for table space and spend time organizing and hauling their items. If the price doesn’t work for you, politely move on.

Dig for Treasure.

Sometimes the best finds are at the bottom of a box. Don’t be afraid to look through bins carefully and respectfully.

Arrive Early.

The best deals go fast. If you’re serious about finding specific items, plan to arrive when doors open.

Tack sales are more than just shopping. They're part of horse community culture. You’ll see familiar faces, swap stories, and maybe even plan the upcoming show season while you browse. Whether you’re saving money, making money, or just enjoying the atmosphere, a well-planned tack sale visit can absolutely benefit you.
