If you’ve ever dreamed of getting into the show ring but felt intimidated by the cost, physical demands, or time commitment of showing full-sized horses, miniature horses or ponies might be the perfect path for you. I’ve run a leasing program for minis for years, and while most participants have traditionally been youth, this year I’ve seen a huge increase in adults joining in, and loving every minute of it!

Miniature horses and small ponies open the door for adults at any stage of life to enjoy showing. Whether you’re returning to the horse world, trying it for the first time, or looking for a more accessible option after health or mobility changes, the world of minis has a place for you. This year the 2025 AMHR National Show welcomed an exhibitor who was 93 years old!

Why Minis Are a Great Choice for Adults

They’re more affordable to maintain.

Feed costs, farrier bills, equipment, everything is simply smaller. This makes showing far more budget-friendly than the full-sized world.

They’re kinder on your body.

Many adults switch to minis after an injury with a big horse or when their knees, back, or hips start to protest the physical demands of riding. Working with and driving a mini is significantly easier on the joints. I know several people who thought their horse-showing days were over until they discovered minis.

They’re surprisingly versatile.

These little athletes can do just about everything:

  • Halter
  • Driving
  • In-hand obstacle
  • Liberty
  • Showmanship
  • In-hand jumping (The horse is the only one doing the jumping!)
  • And more

Don’t let their size fool you, minis are smart, trainable, and honestly, incredibly fun.

How to Start Showing Minis as an Adult

Look for farms in your state.

This is the best first step. Some miniature horse farms are excellent but not very tech-forward, so you may have to do a little digging. Try TurnoutHQ, Google, Facebook, Instagram, or even asking in equine “ISO” groups for leads. Word of mouth is huge in the mini community.

Explore leasing programs.

Some farms, like mine, offer leasing options so you can step into the show world without the full commitment of ownership. Leasing lets you learn, show, and enjoy the experience while the farm handles the major care and housing responsibilities.

Check out the major registries.

There are two primary organizations for miniature horses and ponies:

  • American Miniature Horse Association (AMHA)
  • American Miniature Horse Registry (AMHR) – part of the American Shetland Pony Club (ASPC)

Both registries offer farm directories, local club listings, and event calendars. They’re also incredibly helpful if you reach out they can connect you with someone in your state.

Attend a show or clinic.

Before signing up, go watch a show or attend a clinic to get a feel for the classes and the atmosphere. Mini shows are usually friendly, supportive, and full of people who love to help newcomers.

Ask questions!

Mini folks are some of the most welcoming in the horse world. Trainers, exhibitors, and farm owners are often happy to point you in the right direction or connect you with the right horse.

There’s a Place for You in the Mini Horse World

Whether you're rediscovering your love for horses or stepping into the show ring for the first time, miniature horses and ponies make the experience accessible, rewarding, and incredibly fun. With their versatility, affordability, and gentle physical demands, minis are helping adults of all ages stay involved in a sport they love.
